Our Middle Syndicate students made these flowery creations to say "Thank you" to their Mums. We shared them in assembly and also celebrated our certificate and values card winners Assembly Celebrations This week was 'catch up' time in our Middle Syndicate Assembly, as we acknowledged our Values Card winners for the past few weeks who had not yet received certificates. The photos below also show our week 8 class award winners. Room 6 shared their amazing artwork - sculptures in the style of Kimmi Cantrell and Rm 15 went 'spotty' to make others aware of "Melanoma Day". Week 8 also saw the visit of the Education Review Office - they spent a lot of time talking to our wonderful students and were full of praise for their enthusiasm, maturity and responsible polite behaviour. Well done everyone!! There are big changes for me too, as this year I am team teaching in Room 14 with Peter Poeschl. In previous years I have taught Science and Maths to many different classes, so I am really looking forward to having a base, one class instead of many and a smaller number of students that I can really get to know and have fun with. Hopefully I will lose less things too! I am also looking forward to working with Mr Poeschl I am sure we will be great team. You can find out more about what's happening in Room 14 by looking at our class blog. I will also continue my DP's blog with fortnightly or monthly posts. Below are photos from our Middle Syndicate Assembly. Welcome to our new students in Rms 6, 14, and 15, who all received certificates, to mark their wonderful start at Parawai School. Well done, it's great to have you with us joining the Parawai team. Acids or Bases? Students in Rms 10, 11 and 12 are finding out about acids and bases and thinking about what happens when different liquids go down our storm-water drains. Dishwashing liquid, dishwasher powder, spray and wipe, DampRid; which are acids and which are bases (alkali)? How will they affect the water quality? They are also been researching what other pollutants get spilled into our streams, rivers, lakes and of course into the Firth of Thames. The next step is to create posters or storm-drain pictures to spread the word and stop the pollution. Here are the students testing the liquids and some of their preliminary sketches for posters and storm-drain pictures. It's probably a good idea to do these experiments outside!! We realised that after starting off in Room 10... The biggest balloon had a circumference of 67cm. Well done Tiana and Jordy! The students in Rms 10, 11 and 12 have been learning about the pH scale (acids and bases) and finding out what chemical reactions occur when substances from different end of the scale mix together. What will create the most gas and inflate the balloon. Will there be a temperature change?
Next week we will be thinking about the ways in which our science learning is related the environment and the learning the students did last week with Beccy Dove from Sustainable Schools. What happens when damaging run off goes into our streams and pollutes our waterways, does the pH level change? Does this affect the fish and wildlife in the streams and rivers? Our Fantastic Fishy mural is finished and on display. Well done to all the students who had a part in creating this awesome mural. The fish were drawn by the Juniors and then painted by students in yrs 3 - 6, with help from a few of our Seniors. Check out the patterns in the (multicoloured and multicultural) fish showing the different nationalities we have at school.
Thank you also to Alby for his amazing Pasifika Mural - it's stunning and the students and staff love it. Here are some photos of our "Overnighter". Luckily the rain held off for our Sports - perfect for tiring out the 'Happy Campers". Great fun, great students and great helpers, thanks everyone - job well done! Don't the hills behind Parawai look beautiful in the morning mist. Every child did have bedding and a mattress ..... we wouldn't be that cruel - honestly. (Staged photo Ann) LOL Mural photos coming up ... Watch this space!!
Thank you Alby Tukia for your awesome Pacifika Mural. Well done students for your fishy masterpiece. This Term in our Senior Science sessions, while we carefully carry out our experiments, we are focussing on making and recording our detailed observations of what happens. What can we see. hear, feel, and measure? This week we mixed water with Baking soda, water with DampRid and then water with Baking soda and DampRid altogether. We observed and recorded what what happened. There were definitely some surprises - here are some photos from Rm 10 and 12 - Rm 11 photos to follow Wow! Pet Day, what fun with so many cute and cuddly animals. Awesome art too, in our Pet Day Art Display and Competition, which I had the pleasure of judging - such a difficult task!! Real animals, imaginary creatures, pencil work, paintings, computer graphics, collage, 3D shell animals - what a varied and high quality selection from our learners aged 5 to 13. Here are some pictures of the display with results below. Pet Day Art Competition Results
